Stop using USB to transfer the video.
Start using Firewire to connect the DV port of the camcorder to the firewire port of your computer. If your computer does not have a firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot so you can add a firewire port.How to change resolution of Sony DCR-HC30 Video Cassette to 4:3?

If as Little dog says you are either recording to a SD card then the video will be a lot smaller. use the tape and capture your video via firewire.
