How do I stop videos from USB lagging on my television?

I have put some videos onto a memory stick, which can be inserted into my 26%26quot; LCD television's built-in DVD player. Though the video quality is good, sometimes the video lags. Sometimes the frames mesh together, so the screen is cut into two, showing different scenes. Occasionally the audio lags too. The videos are in MPEG-1 format, which is the only format the USB reader will play. The video only has resolution of a few hundred pixels, so it isn't full 'high definition'. How far do you think I need to downsize it to, or are there any options I should be changing. The video was converted from avi to mpg using ffmpegX for Mac OS X 10.5.How do I stop videos from USB lagging on my television?

WHEN YOU SAY IT'S THE ONLY FORMAT THE USB READER WILL PLAY, DO YOU MEAN THE USB DRIVE OR THE TV?

LOOK IN THE TV MANUAL AND SEE WHAT TYPE USB IT SUPPORTS.

ALSO LOOK ON THE MANUFACTURES WEB SITE TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY SOFTWARE UPGRADES FOR THE TV.
